Solar Battery

What is a Solar Battery, and what does it do?

A typical rooftop solar power system generates energy from the sun via your solar panels, then the inverter turns it into usable electricity. However, if you generate more electricity than you need, you lose the excess. Nevertheless, you can sell it back to the grid at a lower rate than you’d buy it for. At night when your panels are not generating energy, you have got to buy it from the grid. A solar battery stores the excess energy from your solar power system.

Providing:

E

peace of mind to power your evenings or on cloudy days not being reliant on the grid,

E

protecting your home from power outages,

E

reduce carbon footprint, and

E

less demand on the grid.

Solar batteries are a big tick for your hip pocket, the environment, and your peace of mind.

This video explains how battery storage systems work with solar PV and the electricity grid.

Battery costs

The price of batteries can vary greatly depending on the brand, type and size of the battery and how advanced the technology is.

If you’re thinking of installing batteries to save money on electricity, it’s worth weighing up the whole-of-system cost against how much you’re likely to save over time. For example, some advertised prices do not show the other components and installation charges you may have to pay.

The whole-of-system costs can include:

E

the battery

E

the inverter (i.e. to convert DC to AC power for use in the home)

E

a battery management system (i.e. an electronic system that manages the safe operation of your battery by telling it when to charge and when to power your home)

E

installation (e.g. the installer's labour and any siting or battery casing requirements)

E

wiring or retrofitting (e.g. to a solar system, or for use as a battery back-up system)

E

ongoing maintenance

E

end of life recycling and/or disposal.

E

Batteries will only last a certain number of years and can only be recharged a certain number of times.

E

To preserve the life of your battery, you may not be able to use all of its charge (e.g. some batteries should only be discharged to 50%). This is called depth of discharge.

E

As electricity moves in and out of your battery, some energy is lost along the way. How much energy is lost when your battery is used (also known as its round-trip efficiency) will depend on the type of battery.

E

Some household battery systems are designed to be scalable, which means the amount of electricity stored can be increased by joining batteries together (like adding panels to a solar system). This can help meet changing energy needs over time.

E

Consider the number of batteries you need – whether they will be able to supply the immediate power (start-up current) required for your appliances.

E

You will need to contact your home and contents insurance provider to make sure you have adequate cover.

Choosing a battery to suit your needs

When choosing a battery for your home, think about how you want to use it.

For example, you may want to:

E

store and use your solar energy (instead of exporting excess power to the grid)

E

provide back-up power during a blackout (this may require special wiring and you may need a different inverter)

E

buy and store energy at (cheaper) off-peak times and use your battery during (expensive) peak periods

E

power your entire home (i.e. go off grid)

E

use a renewable energy source and your battery energy storage if it is expensive to connect to the electricity grid, or the electricity grid is not available

It will also be helpful to consider:

E

how much electricity you currently use

E

what time of day you use it

E

the tariffs you are charged to buy electricity from the grid

E

the size of your solar system (if you have one).

Solar Battery Storage

We can offer you a custom battery solution based on your home or business needs.

Providing the following benefits:
1. Minimise your dependency on the grid.
2. Reduce your carbon footprint.
3. Store and save solar energy leading to lower electricity bills.
4. Utilizing more solar generated by the panels instead to sending it to the grid.
5. Having a backup to keep select appliances running in the event of a power outage.
6. Impress your friends – great conversation topic making you the talk of the town.
7. Help build the future grid of energy generation and distribution.
8. Increase in property value – a solid investment.
